An exceptional wine produced from 80-110 year-old Garnacha (55%), and Samso (Cariñena) (45%) vines from plots of trossos known as “El Grinyo” and “Mas de Caldera”. These age-old vineyards grow on steep slate terraces, which withstand the variations in weather to bear fruit of tiny yields of 300gr/vines. Fermentation of each variety is carried out separately at between 26-28°C and the must ferments for 18 days to achieve the precise colour and polyphenol compounds. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally in the tank with the end result giving velvety flavours to the wine and helping to preserve it. Primitiu was aged 12-15 months in French Allier, medium toast, first year barrels.
Deep cherry in colour with an intense bouquet, both elegant and expressive, of toast, sensations of creamy oak, chocolate and caramel and light hints of mineral over a background of preserved mature black fruits. In the mouth it is intense, complex, pleasing, meaty, well structured, spicy, viscous, full-bodied. There is a fine balance between fruit, tannins and wood as it crosses the palate providing an excellent end, broad and concentrated in its overall features. The tannins are sweet, mature and very well integrated. The wine is expected to undergo favourable change over the next 6-7 years. Serving temperature: 18-20°C. Production 5,496 bottles authenticated and numbered by hand by owner Antonio Rodríguez and oenologist Josep Valiente.
